Every time the quarterly newsletter lands on the doormat I feel a thrill of anticipation. The last edition (1 December) was – I felt – especially marvellous. The variety of articles (all written by members) covered the opening celebrations at the newly refurbished (with our help) Zellerhütte, alpine skills courses in Scotland and Austria, a club meet in Wester Ross, a historical journey in France and Spain, three interesting Cicerone book reviews, a summer hutting tour in the Gschnitztal, the ski-racing successes of young member George Brown, an adventure spanning the Dolomites, Alps, Andalusia and the High Atlas, a gentle meet in Vorarlberg, an Icelandic expedition, ski-touring in Austria, and a project to visit the base camps of all the world’s 8000m peaks. Last but not least was long-time (and still current) volunteer Diana Penny Sherpani’s memories of 1970s volunteering, working and exploring in the Austrian alps. That every single one of these pieces was written by Alpenverein Britannia members, and made tantalisingly beautiful with their photos, makes the newsletter very, very special. Thanks to everyone who contributed to that edition, and to all other editions, and an especial thank you to Peter Finch, who is our top-notch volunteer editor.
Every section of the Austrian Alpine Association is invited to send representatives to the JHV which is hosted by a different Austrian section each year. In October 2023 the weekend was held in Rankweil, a small town on the western fringe of Austria. The opportunity for networking before, during and after, is extremely valuable for officers of the UK section, and we always try to send a few volunteers. This time we enjoyed the whole weekend as usual and felt honoured to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event in the mountaineering community. You’ll find a more detailed report elsewhere in this newsletter.
We’d like to hear from you if you’re able to give some time to the club:
