Walter Ulrich, a member of the AAC(UK) for about 50 years, died in February aged 95. Walter was a keen mountaineer, making considerable use of the Austrian huts while trekking in the mountains. He was also a regular and valued participant in the Southern day walks for many years.

Walter’s family fled Germany just before the second world war when they could no longer live under a Nazi regime. His father was a distinguished diplomat in Germany both before and after the war. Walter was schooled at Winchester while his father, as an enemy alien, was despatched to the Isle of Man. The family have fond memories of the kindness of the British people at the time. After taking first class honours at Oxford, Walter enjoyed a successful career with the Civil Service, culminating in a period as Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education and Science, where his final role was being in national charge of schools policy. On retirement, he took the chair of the governing body of Beaumont School (St Albans).

He is missed by his wife of 50 years, Jenny, the family and his many friends.
