Editor's Thoughts

by Peter Finch

The feedback to Vernon Thorpe’s newsletter design has been largely positive and we will refine further as necessary. Another positive is the number of contributions from members – too many to include them all in this issue! We have a varied diet with Tamara Covacevich and Kate Halladay taking unusual approaches in their reports on ski touring. Bob Appleyard shines a light on the rocks we take for granted. Allan Hartley has another backwards look at a hut which has developed over the years, in this case because the original was wiped out by an avalanche.

In the last issue we reported on several long- distance adventures – the GR11, the High Level Route and a trans-Tirol trek. This time we have John Pucknell following the E6 from Spain to Cyprus (not all in one year!) and Neil Pitts skiing the length of Norway in a determined effort to overcome Long Covid. Much of the content reflects winter activities but Stiina Kristal lifts the lid on superb summer trekking in Estonia.

Of course, the Autumn edition is the one where we reveal the winners of the Photo & Sketch competition. We can only publish a small selection of your terrific pictures but they are all on the Club website. This year, and in the future, there will be prizes thanks to Cicerone Press, so get snapping and drawing for 2024! There are also gifts for members who refer friends or relatives to join the Club under our September Promotion – see page 11.

Sadly, we say farewell to Walter Ulrich and Peter Brown, members of AAC(UK) for around 50 years, and to Robert Renzler, formerly General Secretary of the ÖAV and a great friend of the AAC(UK).

Contributions for the Winter newsletter should be with the editor by 1 October 2023.
