Jan Haydon died on 11 September 2022 after a very short illness. Like her husband Martin (long time AAC(UK) newsletter designer and printer, and former member of the Executive Committee), Jan was an active member of the Club. 1974 was a significant year for Jan and Martin; they both joined the AAC and met one another on an AAC ‘Introduction to Hutting’ holiday at the Oberland Hütte in the Kitzbühler Alpen, later going on to the Hohe Tauern, where they climbed the Großvenediger and other smaller summits. In 1976 they climbed Slioch beside Loch Maree in Scotland on their honeymoon, hence the name of their house and of Martin’s company. Joining the Club opened many avenues and friendships for them. In 1990 they returned to the Oberland Hütte with their two children, Christian and Shona, 10 and 7 years old at the time. The family climbed 3 notable peaks, before moving on to join the Chairman’s meet at the Berliner Hütte from where they climbed the Schönbichler Horn, 3134m (see photo), while the rest of the group were arriving. This was the first of many AAC Alpine meets enjoyed by the family. In 1999 Christian and Shona took part in the ‘Young Persons Meet’ restoring a section of the footpath from Gschnitz to the Innsbrucker Hütte. Christian now lives and works in Austria. A kind and gentle person, Jan was very good company on Club meets both in the UK and the Alps. She supported Martin in all he did for the Club, including the meets he organised such as the popular Spring meet on Skye, and she regularly attended the Club AGMs.
