Receding glaciers and melting permafrost are mentioned frequently in expedition reports and have been addressed directly in previous issues. Two other major potential environmental changes are tackled this time, a proposed hydro-electric scheme threatening the Ötztal and Kaunertal; and the question of siting wind turbines. The ÖAV is actively involved in trying to balance the need for green energy with preserving the alpine landscape, fauna and flora, and the livelihoods of those living in affected areas. A petition for the Kaunertal seeks your help.
Nicholas Hurndall Smith shows that type 1 diabetes need not be a block to mountain adventures, while Allan Hartley looks back at the history of the Dresdner Hütte as part of the Club’s 75th anniversary. Elsewhere there are reports on the ÖAV and AAC(UK) AGMs and appreciation for the Club’s Hut Fund contributions. The Club’s training and assessment programmes for mountain hiking and Klettersteig are described, along with several expedition reports and, of course, the calendar of future events. A busy read!
Change is afoot!
Since 1996 the Club newsletter has evolved gradually from a 4-page black and white document to the splendid full-colour item we see today. All this has been orchestrated formally by Martin Haydon, a Master Printer and Graphic Designer for the print trade, although he was involved informally for some years previously. Martin has also been a Club member for nearly 50 years and served the Club well in a number of capacities, both as a member of the Executive Committee for 13 years and as organiser of some 29 meets in both Scotland and the Alps. Martin has decided to step down from his role masterminding the newsletter production as he approaches his 80th birthday, and this issue will be his last. There is no doubt that the Club owes him a great debt of gratitude. Thank you, Martin!
We have begun the search for a suitable replacement and invited a small number of graphic design agencies to submit their ideas on how they would present the newsletter in the future. You will see the result in the Summer issue and we will welcome your feedback. We hope you like it!
