September 2022 saw five Club members of all ages attend a meeting in Patterdale to learn about becoming a tour/meet leader. Dan Morgan delivered this brilliant weekend in an informative and relaxed manner. It helped us to understand the role and responsibilities of a leader and outlined the typical features of a tour or meet. Also, Nick Harris, an experienced tour leader, gave a presentation illustrating the need to be adaptable when weather changes or route closures occur.
Some highlights of the weekend which were especially interesting to me were that a variety of potential activities for future meets could be wild camping, Klettersteig, and skyrunning. Also, locations could be beyond Austria, for example Norway or the Pyrenees. In turn, we discussed our aspirations and pathways to achieve these. I now have a clear plan of my progression to leading a tour. Other participants learnt how they can gain qualifications and other mountain skills, with assistance from the Club.
My impression is that we will be well supported by the Club as we take up these opportunities and that there is plenty of guidance to ease the way. I left feeling energized and enthused and would highly recommend this weekend to anyone who has thought of becoming a tour leader.
Dan Morgan, who led this session, commented “All attendees thought the weekend worthwhile and are keen to contribute to the Club by way of meets and tour leading. They identified how the Club can help them with subsidised skills training and qualifications.” The Club is very keen to encourage more members to become leaders in various disciplines and would welcome enquiries via the Office.
