Book Review: "Wanderlust Alps"

Mark Charlton reviews "Wanderlust Alps" ISBN 978-3967040210

Wanderlust Alps, published by Gestalten with Alex Roddie as contributing editor, is a compelling inspiration, a sumptuous coffee table book covering a selection of the best multi-day treks in the Alps; its publication follows that of Wanderlust Europe which covered long distance trails across the continent.

Wanderlust Alps is quite relevant to AAC(UK) members with over thirty multi-day alpine trails split into Western, Eastern Swiss, Italian and Slovenian sections. Austrian routes include the Eisenwurzenweg, Schladmiger Tuaern Höhenweg, Berliner Höhenweg and Karwendal Höhenweg and the LasörlingVenediger Höhenweg. Each route is given a brief description, accompanied by stunning photography and finishing with a fact and tips section and an outline map.

There’s nowhere near enough here to plan a trip, but that’s not the point. Wanderlust Alps is about whetting the appetite, sparking the imagination and inspiring us to dig out those maps and dust off the hut slippers! And maybe also to consider the delights of somewhere new. As I flicked through the pages it occurred to me that it must be twenty years since I’ve been to the Dolomites - now there’s an idea for next summer!
