We are sad to report the death of long-term member David Aspden in September. He died after suffering a fall from which he didn’t recover. He was 91.
Memories of his early mountaineering days are sadly scant, but we do know that he was a regular on the southern walks and at the London lectures for many years. As for Austria, David undertook many of the standard rounds, then in later years he attended several of the Gentle series of tours for senior members to the Zillertal, Ötztal and Stubai. He was always immaculately turned out so that another long-term member, Jim Munday, commented that David was always smart and ‘something of a dapper’ when it came to Haute Couture on the hill.
Outside of the AAC(UK) David was a great lover of classical music, being an avid attendee at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts in London at the Royal Albert Hall. Of endearing memories of David I have several but it was always his love of ice cream that really got my attention. Having just left a Kondetori in Fulpmes I was asked if I had seen David; yes, just left him battling a huge ice cream, and so it is we bid farewell to David, a faithful member for 53 years, fondly remembered as the King of Ice Creams. Our sincere condolences to David’s wife Olive.
