The Stubenberghaus is something completely different from what is normally featured in our ÖAV hut profiles, but it does emphasise how inclusive the ÖAV is, open to everyone who has an interest in the mountains and the outdoor environment.

Located in the province of Steiermark, Stubenberghaus is one of the ÖAV’s most easterly huts, not far from the border with Slovenia. It is the principal hut serving members close to Austria’s second city of Graz. Without the demands of the more mountainous areas to the west, excursions from the hut are more pastoral amid rich woodland and gentle countryside suitable for young families with small children who are keen to explore the outdoors.

The area around Stubenberghaus is also ideal mountain biking country with lots of trails that can be stitched together to provide adventurous days out through woodland and picturesque agricultural wine growing areas.

Children with adventurous pals or parents will also be keen to take advantage and have some fun on the thrill-seeking ride on the mechanised summer luge-toboggan that links the Schöckl cable car stations.

The first hut to be built on the Schöckl was not far from the present hut and was built by the Styrian Mountain Association in 1872. A short time later they decided to build a bigger, grander and more spacious hut with better views towards Graz (which was a prerequisite for being granted financial help from the City of Graz) which was opened in September 1890. This very substantial four-storey, stone-built, shingle-clad hut was completely renovated in 1990 to celebrate 100 years of the Stubenberghaus. In 2000 it was the first ÖAV Schutzhaus to be given protected building status as an historic building. In September 2015 the hut celebrated its 125th anniversary.

Because of the hut’s popularity, and easy access from Graz, it is sometimes a little crowded but there are 4 Stuben with seats for 112 people with room for 120 more on the terrace and a seminar room seating 20 people. The hut’s motto is “Ein Alpen Schmuckstuck”, an Alpine Jewel.
