Superbly sited overlooking the Rofen and Vent valleys, the hut and section were named after the town of Breslau – which at various times in history has been part of many of the great empires and kingdoms of Europe and is now in Poland, and known as Wrocław. DAV Sektion Breslau, now based in Stuttgart, regained the hut in 1972.
The hut started life in 1882 as a small and modest two storey building comprising one communal room with a wood burning stove, table and chairs and a sleeping platform in the roof for around eight people. The simple layout can be seen in the framed original plans that are on show at the hut, and are in stark contrast to the complex of buildings which have been developed over the years and now occupy the site.
The Breslauer is a large and busy hut that has been managed by the Scheiber family from Vent for many years. In spite of its size, the hut has a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere aided by lots of memorabilia dotted throughout the corridors and various Gaststube dining rooms.
Not surprisingly, the majority of people staying at the hut will be those intending to climb Wildspitze (3793m), Austria’s second highest mountain. If this is not your plan, ask the Hüttenwirt for a quiet room so that you will not be disturbed by the 04:30 dawn chorus of huffing and puffing Wildspitze climbers queuing for the 05:00 breakfast slot.
