Mike Wilson, who died on 7th October 2020 after a short illness, was a loyal member of AAC(UK) since 1988.
His love of the mountains began on family holidays to the French Alps, Austria, Germany and Switzerland and, during a conference in Norway, crossing the Styggebreen glacier to the summit of Galdhøppiggen 8100’ (2469m), Norway’s highest mountain.
He participated with typical enthusiasm in crevasse rescue and building ice shelters on the ‘Rock and Ice’ course, despite being rather older than the rest of the group.
Then the Alpine ‘four thousanders’ beckoned and he made several trips to the Alps with other AAC(UK) friends and guides, relishing the ‘alpine starts’ in the small hours from the mountain huts. Being in the mountains was a chance to escape and breathe.
In recent years he kept up with his AAC(UK) friends on Southern Walks, particularly on the Christmas Glühwein walks and at the New Year Dinners in London. He will be missed.
