I’m sad to report the death of Jim Cox who died on Saturday 7th March 2020 following a heart attack while out marshalling a running event the previous week.

I first met Jim on Martin Haydon’s Swiss Oberland meet in 2007 which for me started off with near disaster as I had my wallet stolen at Heathrow and didn’t find out until I got to Switzerland. Once in Grindelwald I tried to get some money but without bankers cards it was useless and I made plans to go home when Jim came to the rescue. “How much do you need?” Jim asked, “Just let me know and pay me back when we get home.” That was big of Jim to lend money to a total stranger.

Over the years, I got to know Jim quite well as he came on lots of my tours to Austria, the Stubai, Zillertal, Ötztal, Venediger, Glockner and was always willing to muck in. His last tour with me was the Zillertal Classics Tour. Whilst funny now, it was a disaster at the time for him as he lost the sole off both his boots, emptying the shops of Mayrhofen of Superglue and duct tape for a makeshift repair. In typical Jim fashion he got on with it with his wry grin. Jim was due to join me this year and a few other seniors in the Venediger but it’s not to be.
