Many members will remember Keith Walker who died in September 2017, aged 73. He and his wife, Paula, joined the AAC(UK) in 1981 following a holiday in Austria at the Barmer Haus, St Jakob im Defereggental, travelling overland by minibus with 16 people from South Tyneside. This started a lifelong love of the Austrian Alps and the couple returned every year, sometimes twice, for skiing and hiking.
After graduating from Durham University and a spell in Nigeria, he had returned to the North-East in the 1970s and took up a post at Prudhoe High School teaching outdoor activities. With an interest in skiing, climbing, mountaineering, hiking, sailing and caving, Keith hosted an out-of-school club and was a long-¬term supporter of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
Keith also enjoyed work parties on Skye and Schiehallion (with the Mountain Bothies Association) and on Arran (with the National Trust for Scotland) and the Scottish ‘wild weekends'. He climbed Kilimanjaro with the AAC in 2006 and visited Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan with Tony Freake's expedition in 2008.
